Scam Alert in Karachi
There is a gang of con artists scamming people of Karachi. I personally know a few families who fell for the trick that’s why I can vouch for the authenticity of this news. This has happened in different areas of the city so it’s not an area specific crime.
First, this gang gathers information about who lives on a particular street, names of the household heads, both male and female. They observe the timings when the male members are not present at the house. After that, a girl is sent to knock the door of the victim. The story presented by this girl is that a neighbor has sent her because the girl’s mother/sister has contracted a terminal disease, normally cancer. She goes on to tell the victim that said neighbor has taken the patient to the hospital and has sent her here.
The girl then gives a fake phone number of the neighbor to the victim. The victim calls the number and the person on the other line pretends to be this neighbor, confirms that what the girl is saying is actually true and asks the victim to help out as much as they can.
Please be careful, I know two families which have fallen for this scam. If you do find someone at your door with a sob story, do not call on the number which is given by them. Tell them you will verify it personally when you meet them. Ask the girl to give you her number and you will contact her.
